Maxmachina Laboratory 2025-2026
DEADLINE: April 18th, 2025
MAXmachina is a lab where storytellers, artists, scientists, and creative technologists expand live performance. They create work that uses science and technology to explore the promise and peril of our rapidly changing world. Projects include music, dance, and experimental and immersive performance.
Media Art Xploration is inviting proposals for our 2025/26 MAXmachina laboratory program for works in dance, theater, music, experimental performance, and immersive pieces incorporating live activation. Past works have included interactive installations, mixed-reality performances, artworks implementing scientific research, and more analogue pieces interrogating the promise and peril of our increasingly technologized world.
WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR?
We like weird ideas that do not fit into categories and familiar ideas made unfamiliar. We appreciate a simple story told well, and the use of traditional forms to illuminate new facets of science and technology also aligns with our mission. We hope to create critical conversations informed by science that encourage expansive and imaginative ways of thinking.

Merganser Magazine: Now Seeking Submissions
Merganser Magazine is a new online journal of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. They accept all genres of poetry and prose: “We’re eager to find strong, well-written pieces across a wide range of material.” That said, they seem to favor science fiction and fantasy themes, as the visual aesthetic of the journal suggests.
Merganser Magazine was established in 2024, and since then they’ve published three issues online. Each issue features writing from three to four contributors.
While Merganser Magazine doesn’t have any firm editorial guidelines, they focus on short pieces that are quick and easy to read online. They prefer writing under 2,000 words, and they don’t like long paragraphs. Authors may submit any number of pieces, but Merganser Magazine prefers not to publish more than one piece by an author at a time.
Merganser Magazine accepts submissions on a rolling basis, and submitting authors can expect a response within one month. Authors published in Merganser Magazine should wait at least six months before submitting again.
Merganser Magazine pays authors published in the journal. Authors of fiction and creative nonfiction receive $0.08 per word (the SFWA pro rate), and poets receive $1 per line.
Merganser Magazine accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work, and they do not accept work that’s generated, translated, or developed by AI.
Merganser Magazine only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.

PSNY Free Verse Workshop: The Queer Grotesque
Poems, we are told, attempt to capture truth; and “truth,” Julia Kristeva writes, is “barren… without makeup, without seeming, rotten and dead, full of discomfort and sickness.” This workshop thinks through reading and writing poems in the tones, registers, and images that invoke that truth: the abject, the horrifying, the queer, the disabled and disabling, and the intimate. Drawing on writers and artists including Ai Ogawa, Hiromi Itō, Cyrée Jarelle Johnson, and Greer Lankton, the workshop will ask students to write their own selves into work, finding ways to find personal and collective solace through that discomfort. Ultimately, this workshop asks: What scares (or revolts) you? Who is scared (or is revulsed) by you? And what’s the difference between those two questions?
About the instructor: Zefyr Lisowski is the author of the forthcoming Uncanny Valley Girls, an essay collection about horror movies, exes, and intimacy (Harper Perennial 2025). A 2023 NYFA/NYSCA Fellow in Nonfiction and 2023 Queer|Art Fellow, she’s also the author of two poetry collections, Girl Work (Noemi Press 2024) and Blood Box (Black Lawrence 2019). Raised in the Great Dismal Swamp, North Carolina, Zefyr lives in Brooklyn and has seen grave robbers twice. Find her at zefyrlisowski.com.
At The Poetry Society of New York, we believe that true creativity flourishes when all voices are heard, especially those that have been historically marginalized. Our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity isn't just a statement—it's woven into the fabric of everything we do. We aim to model this commitment for the entire arts industry, creating spaces where everyone, regardless of their background, feels seen, valued, and empowered.
PSNY's Free Verse Workshops are a direct response to the social inequities that too often silence BIPOC and LGBTQ+ voices. These free monthly workshops offer two distinct, identity-centered spaces: one for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and one for LGBTQ+ creatives. Here, participants can connect, create, and explore their unique identities through poetry, in environments designed specifically for them.
We recognize that these spaces are not just about creativity—they're about justice. By centering BIPOC and LGBTQ+ experiences, we’re working to dismantle the barriers that have long kept these voices on the margins. Each workshop concludes with a resource-sharing session, where participants can exchange literature, community events, and grants, building networks that extend beyond the workshop.
As part of our unwavering commitment to equity, all attendees receive a 50% discount for our Weekly Virtual Workshops—because access to the arts should never be a privilege but a right.
If you do not identify as BIPOC or LGBTQ+, we warmly invite you to explore other PSNY events.

PSNY + Haricot Vert Generative Workshop: Poetry in the Dreamworld
PSNY + Haricot Vert Present: Poetry in the Dreamworld, the National Poetry Month / National Dreamer Day Collaboration of Your Dreams (Literally & Figuratively) ✨
Poetry and dreams share a language—symbols, feelings, fragments of memory. Both move through us, often unfiltered, mysterious, and deeply human. In this generative workshop, we’ll explore the parallels between dreaming and writing, using both as tools for deeper self-connection and poetic play.
Together, we’ll ask:
What does it mean to write from the dreamworld?
How can we bridge the unconscious and the poetic?
What new questions and images can we dream up—together?
We'll look to inspiring poets and intuitive writing prompts to guide us, and close the evening with space to share and reflect. This workshop will be led by Jackie Braje, Brooklyn-based poet, educator, and Chief Operating Officer of The Poetry Society of New York! Jackie is also the Managing Director of the NYC Poetry Festival and co-founder of Milk Press.
